!?

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Jeff Propes, and I am a computer enthusiast, programmer, and advocate of most all things Linux and open source. In fact, I've been playing with computers since I was four years old. My dad had an 8 MHz 286 IBM PC-compatible, and after he showed me a thing or two on it, I hit the ground running and haven't looked back.

This website serves as a place for me to share my knowledge of linux, servers, and programming to the web community. Over time, I've absorbed techniques to do many useful things, and it'd be a shame for it to stay locked up in my head. The portfolio section is a catalog of the websites I've designed in the past. On my projects page, I've documented a few personal projects some of you might find interesting. The how-tos section demonstrates specific methods for accomplishing common tasks. Feel free to look them all over and email me if you have questions or comments.

What does interrobanger mean?

An interrobang is a "nonstandard English-language punctuation mark intended to combine the functions of the question mark (also called the interrogative point) and the exclamation mark or exclamation point (known in printers' jargon as the bang)" (Wikipedia). It was invented in the 60's to replace the repeated use of punctuation marks, which I understand is a no-no in the literary community. It showed up in trendy magazines and published media for around 8 years, then quietly went out of vogue. An interrobanger, by extension of the above definition, would be one who interrobangs.

I've never actually seen a true interrobang in the wild; it's natural habitat (the world of Andy Warhol and his associated traveling circus) is one I don't often visit. But these days, the typographical symbol is gone. In its place stands the very combination of punctuation symbols (?!) it originally sought to replace. That's pretty ironic if you stop to think about it.

I've gotten some weird looks when I write this web address for people. They seem to fixate on the "banger" portion of the moniker and for some reason think it a sexual or violent thing. Let me put the record straight and say that it is neither! There's nothing sinister about it. =)
